Epic Club opened in 2014 to satisfy local urbanites’ thirst for delicious beverages and roof-raising club music. “Back then, in the city we didn’t have proper places for Khmer people (especially Khmer youth) to enjoy a quality night out,” says the club’s co-owner, DJ Illest. “Since, the economy in Cambodia is better than before, and the number of people in the middle class has grown at a remarkable rate.”
Today, on a busy night, Epic can rack up hundreds of eager clubbers all seeking the ultimate night out.
But Epic wasn’t the first establishment that DJ Illest and his business partner set up in Cambodia. Before the famous club, Illest launched various other venues that catered more to tourists and expats in the city. “Those nightclubs had reached the peak of their potential, and as they couldn’t grow bigger, we had the idea of creating Epic to bring a different style of music to Cambodians and Asians.”
At Epic, while the choice of music has some similarities with and references western trends, DJ Illest has crafted his own style that diverges from the normal fare. Promising a night out that caters to a local audience, this approach could be why Epic is so popular with Khmer clubbers.
“The club music consists of the style of international EDM, but mostly it’s a blend from Asian EDM hits, Khmer music references, or sometimes Thai and even Korean music,” notes Illest. This is how Epic gives its partygoers a vibe that Cambodia, particularly Phnom Penh, has never seen before.
“Epic is already recognized as the number one club in Cambodia, but there are also many different clubs popping up over in the city at a tremendous rate,” says the club’s owner. “I am happy about it, because we’re supposed to have many choices of where to go clubbing at night. It’s good for the scene to prosper and grow.”
What to Expect
From the moment you arrive at Epic, it’s apparent that this is not your regular, messy night on the town. “Epic club guarantees a better parking service,” Illest tells us.
The club has a remarkably large, well organized parking area compared to rival nightclubs, with an overflow parking area in case the front is full. This ensures all patrons can feel content with the safety of their vehicle – and turn their attention to the party ahead of them.
Epic club also has its sister venue as a neighbor. Base Club, specializing in live music acts, offers concerts from bands and singers.
But Epic is not a stranger to live events itself. A recent performance from American rap star Kid Ink is testament to this. Every week talented local and international DJs appear to spin up wild vibes to delight the dance floor. Plus the cost of drinks and snacks are genuinely affordable — what could go wrong?
Like most clubs, Epic is packed every weekend. But Ladies’ Night is a big midweek hit with 50% off all cocktails for women on Thursdays.
What the Patrons Think
So what say the clubbers themselves? Trendz found two Epic regulars, who turn up multiple times a week to appreciate the club. “I always go to Epic at least two or three times per week,” says Nara, a 24-year-old architect.
“I like the environment there, people just come here to have fun and drink good beverages, the price is really fair so I consider this the best club in the City.
“On top of that, the service is amazing, I’m very satisfied with things that they have done for us,. That’s why I always give them some tips as a gratitude of having an awesome time. With the great song selection and sound equipment, this place deserves all the praise it can get.”
Vitou, another regular who is in his early twenties and works for a media company, says, “One thing that I love about Epic is they understand us, because most of them are Khmer people, not foreigners.
“Epic understands the type of music that I like, and I can say that I love the music choices here the most, compared to other clubs in the city.
DJ Illest tells Trendz that Epic is planning events in the near future that have never been seen before in Phnom Penh. “We want to organize more events on weekdays, rather than just the weekends. Also, I know that saying this may not strictly be positive, but I want to encourage local Cambodian people to go out during the week too. We can even organize big events, bringing in singers or DJs from all around the world, to perform during those days.”
Epic Club partakes in monthly charitable work to provide support to communities, showing a remarkable sense of care and responsibility for a nightclub, and showing that this innovative establishment is breaking the mold in more ways than one.
